A recent study carried out by the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba in Canada found that sunscreens penetrated the skin and some hazardous ingredients are actually causing skin cancer – not protecting us from it!
Ingredients such as oxybenzone, triclosan and parabens and phalates were being absorbed into the tissues.
OXYBENZONE imitates oestrogen when it is absorbed into the body. It is a hormone disruptor and it is thought this can affect birth weights in unborn children, increase risk of endometriosis in older women and promote the growth of cancer cells!
RETINYL PALMITATE is thought to speed the advancement of skin tumours when on the skin and exposed to sunshine. It has been labelled as a photo toxic and photo carcinogenic ingredient which might increase the speed of malignant cells, thus spreading the cancer. It can therefore increase the risk of skin cancer.
FRAGRANCE can and often has hormone disrupting chemicals which can include artificial musks, parabens and phthalates.
So what ingredients are considered safe to use?
